Today, we gather to honor the life and legacy of an amazing woman, Edith Mondesir, who slipped away peacefully on Thursday July 30, 2020. Marie Altagracia Edith Chatelain, affectionately known as Dadie, was born on July 11th, 1934 in Port au Prince, Haiti. She was the daughter of Irma Malette Chatelain and Christian Chatelain. She was fortunate to grow up in a caring family consisting of her mother and Aunt Carmen. Edith's passion for baking, cooking, and sewing was cultivated throughout her childhood experiences. Edith met her life partner, Gerard Mondesir, in the early 1950's. The couple officially married in 1955. Two days following their wedding, Gerard immigrated to the United States of America. A year later, Edith joined her husband in Nanuet, New York. They eventually settled in Nyack, NY. She worked numerous jobs until she settled as a chemist at Lederle Labs, where she worked for over 30 years. Outside of the workplace, Edith was widely sought out for her culinary skills and sewing abilities. As a seamstress, Edith made special occasion dresses for weddings, communions, and baptisms. She also was frequently hired as a caterer. She crafted elaborate cakes for various events throughout the community. She especially loved making such cakes for family. Edith loved to entertain in her home. It would give her great joy to see her loved ones enjoy the food she prepared. In 1998 Edith, Gerard, and her younger sister Nicole retired to southern Florida. This was the American way to connect to their beautiful Haiti. The couple desired a tropical environment and to reacquaint themselves with friends. While in Florida, Edith always looked forward to hosting family and friends. Edith Mondesir possessed a deep and unconditional love for her family and extended family. Family was one of the most important components to life through her eyes. Edith had infinite respect for the circle of life. Her home was always filled with plants and pets.
